Olympus Rover Trials

This year we aim to enter the Olympus Rover Trials, developing a small experimental rover to traverse a simulated Martian environment. We are in the process of creating a prototype, and would love for you to see how you can contribute to this project!

Our Previous Projects

The StrathSEDS Project team has existed since 2014, with several successful launches and competition wins. Some of our past projects are listed below.

Strathosphere V

One of the society's most experimental manufactures to date. Flaunting a basalt fiber body and radio-transmitting fins, Strathosphere V will launch at International Rocketry Week 2026. Hope to see you there!

Tracking Groundstation

Operating on a series of planetary gears, our ground station recevies GPS and IMU data from our flight computers in real time to track rockets mid-flight, helping us receive stronger data before recovery begins.

Strathosphere IV

Launching at the Mach-25 Rocketry Competition, Strathosphere IV carried an AI-video compression payload on a 98mm airframe, reaching an apogee of 2284m. StrathSEDS won 3rd place in category and received the award for Best Post-Flight Review.

Firefly Ultra

Designed in 2025, the latest of StrathSEDS' SRAD flight computers has a lot to pack in. This six-layered, pyro-enabled computer carries a magnetometer, barometer, gyroscope, two IMUs, and is capable of both GPS and 868MHz LoRa transmission!

Testing My Patience

Following a lost entry the previous year, Still Testing's successor proved the first official launch of our flight computer Firefly Ultra, scoring 2nd place in competition and re-launching at International Rocketry Week 2025.

BLaIM

StrathSEDS' Bot for Logistics and Inventory Management is our own way of keeping track of our supplies, via a system of NFC tags and an integrated Discord bot.

Strathosphere III

Manufactured from a fiberglass body and nosecone, Strathosphere III aimed to launch at the Mach-24 Rocketry Competition, but never flew. It lives on in our hearts and our storage as a learning experience covered in ejection residue.

Firefly Mini

Built as a more compact flight computer, Firefly Mini was built as a low-cost flight logger. The design deatures a new IMU, integrated GPS, and only performed flash storage. It was the first board to use a 6-layer PCB and also comes with a pyro expansion board!

Still Testing

After a 10-year gap, StrathSEDS returned to the National Rocketry Competition in England with a small, punchy rocket that immediately lost itself in a wheat field. Somewhere, in your cereal, there's a little bit of SEDS.

Strathosphere II

After a failed launch at Mach-23, Strathosphere II launched to an apogee of 3,158m at International Rocket Week Successfully deploying all systems and recovering the rocket upon landing.

Firefly Maxi

Improving on Firefly 1.0, this edition featured an integrated GPS, dual redundant pressure sensors, breakwire support, but removed battery charging capability, as the feature saw limited use.

Firefly 1.0

The first SRAD computer of the Firefly line, following the development of the SHAMANBoard. Firefly 1.0 was pyro-enabled, and contains both a barometer and a 9 DoF IMU. In addition, it had both flash and SD storagem and can charge LiFe batteries!

The Mach-22 Launch Competition

The RF Magic mission was a category winning cansat and rocket combination developed in 2021/22. The project involved 3 radios, 2 cansats and a rocket, with an intended apogee of 1km. On launch day, we reached 1009.94m and successfully deployed all systems.

SHAMANBoard

The first flight computer from StrathSEDS, this board was used for mesh radio networking at Mach-22. It caried a 6 DoF IMU, a barometer, a flight logger, and used SD card storage. It also had an external COTS board for GPS data!

The Mach-21 Launch Competition

Small scale simulation of STRATHcube, a student let cubesat project at Strathclyde.

UKube-1

StrathSEDS was part of the UK's first ever CubeSat launch.

National Rocketry Competition 2014
